The Holly and the Ivy – Old French carol. The carol “Holly and Ivy” is often heard in its traditional English version. This French version was found on an old broadside printed in 1710. Many early carols concerning the holly and the ivy reflect an ancient contest between the two for mastery of the forest. In this carol only the holly is depicted, representing various aspects of Christ’s life.

Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella – Music traditional French carol, words by Émile Blémont 1901. The tune to this carol has been known since the 14th century as a lively dance, first appearing in print in 1553 as a dance for the French nobility.
